I love Boston’s independent movie theaters. The Coolidge Corner, Somerville, and Capitol Theaters are beautiful. PLUS, Somerville sells beer. What more could you ask for? Sam Adams in hand, I finally got around to seeing 500 Days of Summer last weekend. I love this story. The director did a good job of capturing a beautiful side of LA. I think Los Angeles gets a bad reputation because of Hollywood, but it really is a great city.
I need to watch 500 Days again to analyze the set design (how awesome was Tom’s giant chalkboard?), but did anyone else catch the hanging origami cranes swans Summer had in her apartment? I started thinking that this could make for awesome (and cheap) apartment decor, especially in an all white space. But how best to hang them?

In my head, I figured you could string some…well, string…across the ceiling with eyelet screws and hang them from there. I actually dislike when these are hung in one straight line. But there were some interesting ideas online.
I can’t post this photo, but sisterpuff has her cranes hanging from a branch suspended from the ceiling. Here’s another example from Kikipotamus:

If you want them all in a concentrated area, you can build a mobile using wire hangers, as demonstrated by Jordan Ferney:
.
I think I still like the idea of creating a clothesline/grid of sorts across the ceiling though.
The film also made me want to go shopping at ModCloth, until I realized I can’t really afford to shop there on a budget. I might just head down to Poor Little Rich Girl instead.

That was such a cute movie!
I’ve always been in love with paper cranes, but have never known what to do with them all. Thanks for the inspiration!
You don’t happen to know where I can find a picture of Summer’s tree with the origami on it? I saw the movie recently and I absolutely adored it.
I should be an investigative reporter. See the update. Hope this is helpful for now!
impressive blog! i’m constantly challenged to live an authentic life within my means (i’m significantly past the quarter life–much closer to the ‘half life’ lol), and i like to see what others do. i’ve been visiting your blogroll sites and bookmarking them.
thanks, you’re so sweet! let me know if there’s anything else you want to read about. I’m happy to oblige.
also loved the movie!!! i am in the process of putting together a tree like summers to hang my little bird figurines on, but i do love the origami! also, i am pretty sure toms “chalkboard” was just a wall painted in chalkboard paint, which is pretty cool stuff. i could be wrong but it was awesome in the movie.
It probably is a chalkboard paint wall! Although I do have a friend who lived in this apt building in Atlanta that was an old school building. They had huge windows and hallways. There was a random chalkboard in her room and a clock on the wall made out of happy meal toys.
Can you imagine all the dust from the chalk? I’d put one across from my bed, though.
I’m so in love with paper cranes. My goal is to make 1,000. I’m slowly working towards that goal but hanging them up always has been an issue for me. I love the idea of the tree and mobiles. By the way such a cute website! =)
Can anyine tell me where i can find the wallpaper in summer’s apartment
Thanks
