Apparently, they expect you to work in grad school. Not cool. I sort of thought I could roll into work around noon, putter around for a few hours, head home and they’d just hand me a degree eventually. Alas, my committee insists on meeting and I am now in a rush to cram 4 months worth of work into 1 week.
So I’m stressed and doubting myself and I think I need some inspiration. What to do? Obviously I should stop reading journal articles and start reading children’s books!
I read Oh The Places You’ll Go at least 3 times a year. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. I don’t really care either way though, because that book has a lot of great life advice for when you’re stuck in a lurch. But there’s a world beyond Dr. Suess. Let’s explore it together:
Sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
We must try not to sink beneath our anguish, Harry, but battle on.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Here is my secret. It’s really quite simple: One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes.
Le Petit Prince
If ever there is tomorrow when we’re not together… there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is, even if we’re apart… I’ll always be with you.
Winnie the Pooh
At last he came to a door, with these words in glowing emeralds: THE END OF THE WORLD. He did not hesitate. He opened the door and stepped through.
Ender’s Game
It does not do to dwell on dreams and forget to live.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
“But, Charlotte,” said Wilbur, “I’m not terrific.”
That doesn’t make a particle of difference,” replied Charlotte. “Not a particle. People believe almost anything they see in print.”
Charlotte’s Web
Rivers know this: there is no hurry. We shall get there some day.

I just got a little emotional.
Do you have a favorite? I need to make a reading list for my niece.
Shel Silverstein, when she’s old enough! Especially the “Something Missing” poem.
You can never be too young. Today I read some of Hillary Clinton’s biography to her and we talked about universal health care.
Interesting issue, I did not thought reading it was going to be so cool when I read the title.
